Ensuring Safe Rides to School: C.A.T.S. Partners with Henrico County Public Schools for Transportation Training

Every child deserves a safe and accessible ride to school, and proper training plays an essential role in making that possible.

On September 28, 2026, Children’s Assistive Technology Service (C.A.T.S.) Richmond proudly partnered with Henrico County Public Schools to support an important in-service training session for special education bus drivers.

As part of the training, C.A.T.S. provided several different types of wheelchairs, giving transportation staff the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience with mobility equipment. This training helps drivers better understand the unique needs of students who use wheelchairs and reinforces the importance of safe, accessible transportation.

Supporting Safety Through Education and Collaboration

For students who rely on mobility equipment, getting to and from school safely requires more than just transportation. It takes knowledgeable, well-trained drivers who understand how to properly accommodate different types of wheelchairs and support the students who use them.

By providing a variety of wheelchairs for the training, C.A.T.S. helped create an opportunity for drivers to become more familiar with the equipment they may encounter on their routes.

Recognizing a Commitment to Student Safety

A special thank you goes to Kim Cooper, Transportation Supervisor for Henrico County Public Schools, and the entire transportation team for their ongoing commitment to student safety.

Their dedication to ensuring that drivers receive specialized training reflects the important work happening behind the scenes to make school transportation safer and more inclusive for students with disabilities.

More Than Equipment: Creating Opportunities

At C.A.T.S., our mission extends beyond providing assistive technology at no cost to children with disabilities. We believe in building partnerships that help remove barriers and create opportunities for every child to participate fully in everyday life.

Collaborations like this one demonstrate how sharing resources, knowledge, and expertise can make a meaningful difference in our communities.

Because every child deserves more than a ride to school. They deserve a safe journey filled with opportunity, inclusion, and the confidence to thrive.

We are grateful to Henrico County Public Schools for inviting C.A.T.S. to be part of this important training and for their continued commitment to the students and families they serve.
